After the years of Covid, and a lot of time at home, we have seen a growing interest in enjoying delicious food and wine at home. Thousands have taken wine courses online, many have read and learned something about wine, and we drink more and more expensive wine than before. That is why many people want an elegant wine room, and more than before have acquired one in recent years. The wine room has become a trendy product that also increases the value of the home.
A traditional wine room is functional and practical, but with today's new solutions it can also be seen as a stylish piece of furniture. Today, the design possibilities are many. Now you can build the wine room yourself from start to finish in close collaboration with Thermocold's experts. Whether you buy a standard product or order a custom-made one, the room comes as a complete building kit that resembles LEGO bricks.
In this article, we will primarily address the design options you have for your new wine room.
The purpose of the wine room
Before you start planning your wine room, you should think about its purpose. Do you primarily want a practical wine room – a dark, cool room with favorable conditions, where the goal is to store as many bottles as possible in the best possible and accurate way? Or do you want a wine cabinet – a piece of jewelry in the home, placed under the stairs, in the cellar or in the hall? How about a glass panel or hatch in the floor where you can look down at your wine collection? The possibilities are many. The important thing is to have a conscious relationship with what you want.
How many bottles?
It is never good to know how many bottles to calculate based on. To start somewhere, you can start by considering how many bottles you have today, and how many bottles you envision having in the future. Some are starting to collect for the first time and only have 14 bottles, while others have several hundred bottles and are considering their fourth wine cabinet. In any case, it is important to plan for the future more than to plan based on the current situation. Many collectors have experienced an increased interest when they feel secure that their collection is stored in a proper and good manner.
The place
Find two or three possible places in your home, and consider them against the number of bottles and the purpose of the wine room. With today's possibilities for creating elegant wine walls that fit into most living rooms, kitchens and recreation rooms, the need for space has taken on a completely different meaning. Take a look at the various wine room concepts that Thermocold KFD AS delivers.
Size, aggregate and price
When planning your wine room, you will naturally have to think about what type of door you want and what type of wine cooler you need. When you help design your own Thermocold wine room, our experts will advise you on which products will work best together.
But note that it doesn't necessarily cost much more for a 3 x 3 meter wine cabinet than one that is 2 x 2 meters. The larger the wine room you build, the cheaper it will be per square meter. You still need a unit, but to increase the size of the room you just need more panels and shelves.
A functioning wine room must have a good wine unit. Some people choose to buy a foreign model for 30–40,000 kroner, but there are actually very affordable Norwegian quality units that are designed for wine rooms up to 15m3. Thermocold sells two variants, EF5 Wine and EC15 Wine, which are specially designed for storing and aging wine.
What type of door?
Most wine rooms today come with glass doors, but you can also get very affordable insulated doors in black. Doors for wine rooms are often divided into the following groups: integrated doors, surface-mounted doors and sliding glass doors.
An integrated door is folded into the wall. They are most often used when the door is to match the style of other walls, or be integrated with the same furniture panels as a kitchen. For a matching style, you can then mount it on a furniture panel from your kitchen supplier. The doors can also be delivered in glass or with a stainless steel front.
An external door is simple and straightforward, and is located on the outside of the wall. Four plastic angles are attached to the light opening with metal inserts to which the magnetic strip attaches. You can also get external doors made of glass.
Sliding glass doors are popular and usually provide good visibility into the room. These are usually ordered to measure. Remember to choose a good U-value for the glass, to best maintain the temperature.
Design and material choices
You can either build the wine room yourself from wood, plastic and insulation, or buy a ready-made element room and "click" it into place. The latter is the easiest and best, especially today where the number of wine room concepts has increased significantly compared to previous years. The biggest advantage of an element-based wine room is that you get a safe solution that experiences very few problems with fungus, rot and moisture.
Cold room panels
One of the advantages of ordering standard or custom-made wine rooms from Thermocold in black panels is that the wine room can be easily dismantled, moved or rebuilt. In addition, you can easily set up most of the element rooms from Thermocold in one evening, and get it ready yourself. l use. This of course depends on size and design, but most craftsmen are happy to provide good prices for the installation and integration of our wine rooms.
The room itself is assembled without screws – you just use an included key to lock the floor, walls and ceiling together. Insulated panels from Thermocold provide excellent control of the climate in the room, and ensure low energy consumption.
Wooden wine room
Building a wine room out of wood is entirely possible. Some people manage to build this on their own, while others need help from a carpenter. You can see the construction instructions and how this is done in another article on Themocold's website, but in general terms you build a room within a room, with a small clearance/ventilation against existing walls.
Building a wine room out of wood is a bit more work. It also takes up a bit more space, and there are some materials you can't use inside the wine room itself (such as drywall, MDF, and regular particleboard) as they can't withstand high humidity.
Wine room with glass walls
Thermocold currently produces several stylish, custom-made wine rooms built with glass walls.

However, there are many different types of "glass rooms" on the market that do not ensure good and proper storage of your wine. Most glass wine rooms that are posted on social media are beautiful designer furniture, but they are often without refrigeration. Some of these wine rooms have refrigeration, but come with glass walls with a U-value that is too low. Often, the glass rooms you see on social media from restaurants are simple rooms intended for storing "drinking wine" - that is, the wine is stored at a serving temperature of 16–18 ℃. With a wine product from Thermocold, you are assured of proper and good storage and storage of wine.
Eventually
You decide which solution you go for, what type of room you want to build and what qualities you prefer. Feel free to read more about these things on Thermocold's new website.
